A research institute in Columbus, Ohio, quietly enlisted by the Air Force to study UFO reports. Late December 1951, Capt. Edward J. Ruppelt met with Battelle, and the informal contract became known as Project BEAR. Its 1955 study was published as Project Blue Book Special Report No. 14, issued under the Air Technical Intelligence Center's name to keep the institute anonymous. The study listed the 1949 Rogue River disc sighting as Case 10 among its unknowns. Battelle also examined grass from the 1952 Florida Scoutmaster case. The roots were degenerated, apparently by heat.
