Jerome Clark was a researcher and the author of The UFO Encyclopedia. His name comes up again and again, judging the cases that shaped the field. In 1966 he revived the forgotten Mystery Airship Wave of 1896 and 1897 in Flying Saucer Review. For about 70 years, no one had paid it any attention. He found the weather balloon answer to the Gorman Dogfight plausible and called that case overrated. On the Aztec crashed saucer story, he wrote that local residents denied it almost unanimously. He also called the Pascagoula Abduction the second most famous UFO-abduction case in history.
