An astronomer, and for years the Air Force's own scientific consultant. J. Allen Hynek consulted for Project Sign in 1948 and later served Project Blue Book. In Socorro in 1964 he interviewed Lonnie Zamora and found him basically sincere, honest and reliable. Two years later in Michigan came his swamp gas explanation, and the press mocked it. Over time he broke with official verdicts. By 1972 he regretted agreeing to ball lightning at Levelland. With the Center for UFO Studies he received Betty Andreasson's 1975 letter. He also sat on the Project Hessdalen advisory committee.
