The US Air Force's long-running inquiry into unidentified flying objects grew out of Project Sign and Grudge. Capt. Edward J. Ruppelt brought it early fame. He rebuilt the Mantell case from damaged microfilm and had the Mariana film reanalysed, ruling it an unknown. In 1964 its science consultant, J. Allen Hynek, reached Socorro, and the Lonnie Zamora case stayed unidentified. Its verdicts drew heavy criticism too. The Exeter officers pushed back against its explanation, and Hynek later called that case a showcase of Blue Book negligence.
