Allan Hendry was chief investigator for the Center for UFO Studies, and he wrote The UFO Handbook. In the Val Johnson Incident of 1979, he interviewed Johnson on 4 September 1979 and ran magnetic tests on the car. The results were inconclusive. In the Jimmy Carter sighting at Leary, Georgia, his calculations agreed with Robert Sheaffer's explanation. It was Venus. He also criticised the Battelle statistical study of 1955, arguing that the group would never have tried it had they known how loose the data were. Decades later, Keith Basterfield drew on his handbook when reviewing the North West Cape Black Sphere.
