An optical physicist with the US Navy. Bruce Maccabee worked at the Naval Surface Weapons Center and studied some of the field's best-known photographs and films. He held the McMinnville negatives from 1974 to 1999. By his analysis the object was large and distant, with no thread visible. In 1978 he spent about a month in New Zealand studying the Kaikōura film. He concluded it showed unknown objects or phenomena. He later said the Gulf Breeze photographs had a good chance of being real, a claim that drew sharp debate.
