Valensole is a high plateau in Provence, in the lavender country of what was then the Basses-Alpes. It became known for one encounter in 1965. Maurice Masse farmed there. He was 41, a former Resistance fighter with a good name locally. Newsweek has called the case France's Roswell. In 1971 the gendarmerie captain Guillaume Kervendal cited Valensole beside the Marliens ground trace of 1967, calling them significant of a real and serious problem. In 2025 the story reached French cinemas as the film Valensole 1965.
