A rare glowing atmospheric discharge. In this archive it keeps turning up as an explanation, and it is just as often disputed. 1957. The Air Force put the Levelland case down to ball lightning or St. Elmo's Fire. J. Allen Hynek later said he was not proud of agreeing so quickly, because witnesses described objects 100 to 200 feet long. In 1968 Martin D. Altschuler used R. J. Childerhose's Sabre photograph in the Condon Committee report as evidence for ball lightning. Bruce Maccabee rejected that reading. He made the same objection in the Campeche FLIR case of 2004.
