France's official UFO office sits inside the space agency CNES. It has gone by several names over the years, GEPAN among them. In 1981 GEPAN took over the Trans-en-Provence case. Jean-Jacques Velasco led the site work. Technical Note 16 followed on March 1, 1983. It concluded that a major event had occurred and ruled out a helicopter, a weather balloon or an artillery shell. In 2015 GEIPAN published the gendarmerie reports on Maurice Masse's Valensole encounter. It classes both cases "D", unexplained after investigation. Its report also appears in the Chilean Navy infrared video file.
