Great Falls, Montana. Here, at Malmstrom AFB, the 341st Strategic Missile Wing ran Minuteman I missiles for Strategic Air Command, and its launch officers worked 60 ft underground. In 1967 the base became the scene of the Echo and Oscar Flight missile shutdowns, a case later tied to retired officer Robert Salas. Skeptics offered power transients, Mars and a test pulse as explanations. Salas rejects them. November 7, 1975. Malmstrom missile crews reported a large red to orange to yellow object. The next night radar logged seven returns, and two F-106 interceptors were scrambled.
