A cryptozoologist who turns up again and again in the archive, sometimes as the field investigator and sometimes as the commentator. In 1973, as an anthropology student at Southern Illinois University, he travelled to Enfield and interviewed witnesses. He left bewildered. In 1977 Loren Coleman interviewed all three Dover Demon witnesses within a week. He also gave the creature its name. With Jerome Clark he co-wrote Cryptozoology A to Z, which retold cases such as the Lawndale Thunderbird. He also defended Albert Ostman's Sasquatch story in 2010, and he called Jerry Crew's Bluff Creek footprints a turning point.
