On the Shag Harbour incident, Dunning argued in 2017 that marine flares or a meteoric fireball fit the reports. On Cash-Landrum, he noted that the US Air Force had no twin rotor helicopters in 1980, and he pointed to a doctor's diagnosis of alopecia areata. In 2014 he agreed with the FAA that the St. Clair County triangle was an advertising blimp. He called the Trinity crash claim a literal hoax.
