The Royal Australian Air Force runs through decades of the archive's Australian cases. In 1944 its No. 1 Operational Training Unit flew Beaufort bombers over Bass Strait at night. That was where pilot Ricky Royal said something joined him. 29 December 1959. The RAAF interviewed Father Gill over the Boianai sightings, and Squadron Leader F. A. Lang judged him reliable. Its investigators later checked Maureen Puddy's 1972 encounter and concluded that the cause could not be determined. In 1982 Bill Chalker became the first civilian given access to the RAAF UFO files.
