Directorate of Air Force Intelligence

Organisation 3 stories, 1953 to 1960

Inside the Royal Australian Air Force, the Directorate of Air Force Intelligence, or DAFI, kept the flying saucer files. Its name runs through the Drury film affair of 1953. The best frames of that footage over Port Moresby went missing. A 1966 confidential RAAF paper suggested they might still sit in DAFI's archives. That affair, and a wave of sightings in Victoria, led the directorate to ask physicist Harry Turner of Melbourne University for a classified scientific appreciation of UFO reports in 1954. In early 1961 it ruled on Rev. Lionel Browning's Cressy sighting in Tasmania. Its verdict was moonrise and meteorological conditions.
