A Rio physician, Olavo Fontes served as the Brazilian representative of APRO. Several of the country's best-known cases reached English-speaking readers through him. September 1959. He published the Fort Itaipu account of the burned sentries in the APRO Bulletin. Four Army officers had told him the story, and he said he was refused access to the patients. On 22 February 1958 he and João Martins took Antônio Villas Boas's deposition in Rio de Janeiro. Fontes concluded that Villas Boas had mild radiation sickness. He also translated the José Higgins encounter in May 1961 and defended the Barra da Tijuca photographs.
