A mountain in Washington, and the backdrop to the sighting that began the modern saucer era. June 24, 1947. Pilot Kenneth Arnold took a detour near Mount Rainier to search for a crashed US Marine Corps C-46 transport, with a $5,000 reward on offer. There he reported nine objects flashing as they flipped in unison. In the 1947 Flying Disc Craze, reports soon came in from across the country. In the Maury Island Incident, a Tacoma log salvager named Harold Dahl came forward only after Arnold's story reached the national papers.
