June 21, 1947. Dahl was on his salvage boat in the East Passage off Maury Island with two crewmen, his 15-year-old son and the family dog. Overhead, at about 2,000 feet, hung six huge doughnut-shaped craft of silver metal with round portholes. Smith, the United Air Lines Flight 105 pilot, later looked into the claims alongside Arnold. In 1956 Edward J. Ruppelt called the whole affair a hoax, though defenders such as Steve Edmiston say Dahl confessed under pressure. Writers later linked the case with the Twin Falls saucer hoax. It also appears with Ubatuba and Council Bluffs among the cases of alleged UFO debris tested in a laboratory.
