Jupiter

Term 3 stories, 1965 to 2012

Jupiter, the planet, comes up again and again in this archive as the official explanation. August 3, 1965. The Air Force called the Tinker AFB and Wichita radar sightings astronomical, naming Jupiter alongside several bright stars. In the 1978 Clarenville case, the National Research Council in Ottawa suggested the planet. RCMP Constable Blackwood rejected the idea and asked how a planet could cast a shadow on the water. At Pangong Tso in Ladakh, astronomers from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics measured the lights with a theodolite and concluded they were Jupiter and Venus, made unusually bright by the thin, clear air.
