A US astronomer and retired USAF major, James McGaha brought the sceptic's case to several famous sightings. With Joe Nickell in Skeptical Inquirer, he argued in 2011 that the Exeter Incident was a KC-97 tanker. He said he recognized the light pattern from the tanker's underside lights. At Stephenville, he pointed to F-16 formations, strobes and flares, and questioned how the radar analysts had chosen their data points. For the 1954 Florence stadium sighting, he proposed ballooning spiders, which migrate in September and October. Critics pushed back each time.
