George Van Tassel was a former aircraft mechanic and flight inspector for Douglas, Hughes and Lockheed. He took over an abandoned airstrip beside Giant Rock and lived in rooms dug beneath the rock, where he held meditation meetings. January 6, 1952. He said a telepathic message arrived from Lutbunn, and the name Ashtar first appeared in his channelled messages that year. His Giant Rock conventions became a gathering place for the contactee circuit. Daniel Fry attended them for about 20 years, and both Truman Bethurum and Howard Menger spoke there.
