A sceptic of the Cercle Zététique, Éric Maillot spent decades looking for ordinary answers to France's strangest cases. From 1996 he argued that the Cussac children saw a military Alouette II helicopter. In 1998 he flagged a mismatch in the Air France Flight AF3532 radar evidence. The radar track came from the right, while the crew saw the object on the left, so he proposed a Guppy cargo aircraft. For Laxou in 1982 he suggested a partly deflated mylar balloon. In 2023 he and Jean-Michel Abrassart reported new evidence for it.
