A zoologist and palaeontologist who writes at Tetrapod Zoology, Darren Naish turns up across the archive as a careful voice in cryptid debates. On the Valhalla sea serpent of 1905, he calls it a great classic of the field. On the Zuiyō Maru carcass, his verdict came in 2020. The evidence for a basking shark, he wrote, is very strong. He judged in 2019 that Tim Dinsdale's Loch Ness film almost certainly does not show a monster. He also noted that Roger Patterson drew a scene from William Roe's 1955 account a year before Bluff Creek, and that the scene is just about identical to the one Patterson filmed there.
