contactee

Term 3 stories, 1868 to 1956

A contactee claims to have met beings from elsewhere and received their messages. In the 1950s the word named a movement. Truman Bethurum was one of its founding voices. He said Captain Aura Rhanes of Clarion told him to found the Sanctuary of Thought in Arizona, and he spoke often at George Van Tassel's Giant Rock conventions. Elizabeth Klarer's encounters with Akon of Meton remain the best-known female contactee case. Even older stories get measured against the type. Bill Chalker noted that Frederick William Birmingham's 1868 Parramatta Park account resembled the 1950s contactee stories.
