little green men

Term 4 stories, 1950 to 2000

A stock phrase of the field, and often a joke. In 1955 the witnesses at Kelly-Hopkinsville described silver beings. The Evansville Courier called them little green men, and the phrase stuck. A week later a wire story had Mrs. Darwin Johnson blaming her Ohio River attacker on one of them. At Steep Rock Lake in 1950, a mine executive named Gordon Edwards wrote a fictitious story to mock encounters with little green men. In 2000, Sussex Police officers over Brighton joked about them among themselves and kept their footage private for about two years.
