A wartime name for lights that would not explain themselves. Between 1941 and 1945, Allied aircrews over Europe and the Pacific reported glowing balls of light pacing their aircraft. The name came from a Smokey Stover comic strip, brought out at a debriefing on 27 November. The Robertson Panel later judged that these objects would have been called flying saucers had the term existed. The Tulagi formation of 1942 is filed among them, though Sgt. Stephen J. Brickner described solid silver objects rather than lights. Analysts later weighed foo fighters as one explanation for the Wonsan-Sunchon B-29 sightings of 1952.
