A watercolour painter from the Southampton area, Doug Bower became one of crop-circle lore's best-known self-confessed hoaxers. He had spent years in Australia. There he learned of the 1966 Tully saucer nests at Horseshoe Lagoon, which he later named as his inspiration. Back in England he brought the idea to his friend Dave Chorley. In 1991 the two men admitted faking hundreds of crop circles. Their confession is often set beside the 1678 Mowing-Devil pamphlet. Doug Bower died on 21 July 2018, aged 94.
