Dave Chorley was a watercolour painter from the Southampton area. With his friend Doug Bower, he became one of England's self-confessed crop circle makers. Bower had heard about the 1966 Tully saucer nests while living in Australia, and he told Chorley about them once he was back home. The two men began making circles together. In 1991 they admitted faking hundreds of them, and they named Horseshoe Lagoon as their inspiration. That confession now sits in crop-circle lore. It even turns up alongside the Mowing-Devil pamphlet of 1678, whose woodcut is still called the oldest known image of a crop circle.
