Physicist Willy Smith appears in these files as a researcher who checked the numbers. He worked with the Center for UFO Studies, and one case lists him with UNICAT. In 1992 he reanalysed the 1959 Killian case. American Airlines Flight 139 had been paced by three lights, and Smith rejected the Bradford explanation because Bradford lay north of the flight path while the lights were seen to the south. For Kosmos 1188 in 1980, he estimated the object's speed at one to two kilometres per second. At Gulf Breeze he found double-exposure trickery in the photographs.
