A British mountaineer whose name runs through the Yeti record. On 1 June 1933 he set out with Frank Smythe from Camp VI on Everest. He fell ill and turned back, so Smythe went on alone. Autumn 1951. As leader of the British Mount Everest Reconnaissance Expedition, Shipton crossed unexplored country with Michael Ward and Sen Tensing and photographed footprints near the Menlung Glacier. That photograph became a benchmark. Later finds by Don Whillans in 1970 and Anthony Wooldridge in 1986 were set beside it.
