In Canneto, a small frazione of Caronia in the Metropolitan City of Messina, the Pezzino family and their relatives lived on Via Mare, near the sea. Their village became the scene of the Canneto di Caronia fires. December 2018. Mount Etna was erupting, and ash plumes disrupted Catania airport. South of the island, an infrared sensor aboard an uncrewed U.S. Air Force platform flew near Naval Air Station Sigonella. It recorded what became known as the Mt. Etna Object.
