A large, ape-like creature of North American folklore, and one of the archive's most persistent names. The story often starts in 1924, at a gorge later named Ape Canyon. That attack is still told as the founding Bigfoot story of the Pacific Northwest. In 1971 came the Fouke Monster attack on the Ford house, a creature Nickell files among the southern "skunk ape" variants. Autumn 1973 brought the Uniontown encounter in western Pennsylvania. There Stan Gordon logged Bigfoot reports and UFO reports from the same places, sometimes within hours of each other.
