This is an FBI Freedom of Information/Privacy Acts release on Silas Newton. It includes a 1951 internal memo about inquiries from the California Attorney General's office. That office asked about Newton because he was cited as an authority in Frank Scully's 1950 book "Behind the Flying Saucers." The FBI reported that Newton had a 1936 New York arrest for grand larceny. It also recommended telling California that Lee Gebauer may be Lee Julius Arnold Gebauer, who was convicted in federal court at Tucson in 1944.

Robinson, a former Special Agent of the Bureau who entered on duty as a Special Agent (A) in March of 1934 and resigned on April 23, 1941. His resignation stated that he felt that he had progressed as far as he could in the Bureau's employ and no derogatory information appears in the file concerning him. A news item submitted by the San Francisco Office dated December 3, 1950, which appeared in the San Francisco News, reflected that Robinson was to be appointed director of investigation for Attorney General-elect Edmund G. Brown, present Attorney General for the State of California, and that Robinson was formerly connected with the Senate Investigations Committee in Washington and that prior to that time he was associated with the Truman Committee. (67-33298) ## OBSERVATION: In view of the fact that it has now come to the attention of the Bureau that Lee Gebauer is identical with Lee Julius Arnold Gebauer, FAI Number 3094424, it is felt that as a matter of cooperation with the California authorities, the Bureau might desire to refer the California authorities to the public record of Gebauer's conviction since that conviction is a matter of public record. ## RECOMMENDATION: If you approve, it is recommended that the attached letter be forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General for the State of California, pointing out that Lee Gebauer, concerning when an inquiry was received, may be identical with Lee Julius Arnold Gebauer who was convicted in Federal Court at Tucson, Arizona, on February 23, 1944. A current check of the Identification Records of the Bureau does not reflect an arrest for Lee Julius Arnold Gebauer subsequent to 1944. The letter setting forth the above information is attacked herewith.
