This Central Intelligence Agency release, dated 2012-06-01, contains an English translation of a 1948 Soviet article by S. P. Tolstov and M. A. Orlov on archaeological aerial surveys in Khwarazm, Uzbekistan, during 1945 and 1946. It describes flight altitudes, lighting and camera methods for photographing ruins. The authors report flights of more than 9,000 kilometers that doubled the number of known monuments, located medieval cities and irrigation networks, and produced an archaeological map. It contains no UFO material.

Here we expected to find the medieval city of Dzhond, but we discovered in the high bush only isolated ruins at a great distance one from another. Only on rising higher we saw the plan of the entire city with its well, main city buildings, caravanserai and parks. Aerial investigation of a monument in carried out in the following order: (n) Low altitude. (b) Middle altitude, 300-600 motors. (c) Maximum altitude, surveying, etc. In the low altitude zone the plane circles over the monument gaining altitude during which visual observation should be made for details and lighting. In the middle zone the plane makes larger circles and visual observation is carried out for the study of the general configuration of the monument. In the higher zone visual observation is supplemented by a sketch and decisions are taken as to the best angles for surveying. In the two seasons, aviation routes of the Expedition covered more than 9,000 kilometers in southwestern Kizil-Kum, Kara-Kum and the southeastern part of the Usturt Plateau, doubling the number of monuments discovered.
