This declassified quarterly report covers July 1 to September 30, 1953. It comes from the NIMH Addiction Research Center at the PHS Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, and was signed by Director of Research Harris Isbell. It describes clinical, biochemical, neurophysiological and psychological studies of addiction, including trials of codeine substitutes, morphine and Nalline mixtures, meperidine addiction, and chronic LSD-25 intoxication, which produced rapid tolerance. It also lists the unit's publications, lectures and film showings. It does not discuss UFOs.

We cannot agree that the LSD-psychosis resembles schizophrenia. Certain isolated symptoms that are observed in schizophrenia, such as depersonalization, derealization and hallucinations are observed under LSD. However, insight is always maintained and affect is usually appropriate. The total picture of LSD-intoxication constitutes a distinct and recognizable clinical entity, which we feel could be confused only with intoxication with mescaline. In fact, LSD-intoxication resembles intoxication with cocaine more than schizophrenia. The experiment on chronic intoxication has been completed in 3 patients. One patient withdrew after six days chronic intoxication and the experiment is still in progress in the 2 remaining patients. A rapid decline in the effect when one dose of LSD-25 was given daily was observed in all 3 patients who completed the experiment. Initial doses were 1.5 to 2 mcg./kg. 190 to 130 micrograms total dosel administered once daily. The first dose induced the usual changes in mentation, perception, blood pressure, rectiliary size, and tendon reflexes. Partial tolerance to this dose was evident by the second day of administration and appeared to be complete after four days administration. At this point the dose was increased, and after 7 to 10 days, tolerance appeared to be complete to 3 mcg./kg. (total dose of about 180 micrograms).
