Bulawayo Airport Radar-Visual Sighting and Hawk Jet Intercept

Zimbabwe, 1985. The Air Force of Zimbabwe flew BAE Hawk jets from Thornhill Air Force Base, near Gweru in the Midlands. About 145 kilometres away, north of the city of Bulawayo, lay Bulawayo Airport. One July evening, both places were drawn into the same story.

Monday, 22 July 1985. The craft was first spotted as it streaked over southern Zimbabwe. Then it stopped. Air traffic controllers at Bulawayo Airport watched it hover. They tracked it on radar. Dozens of people on the ground saw it too.

It was very bright and rounded, with a short cone above it. In the fading light it caught the colours of the sunset. Once it got dark, it was giving off its own light. One second-hand account comes from a commenter who said their sister was a controller on duty. It says the object hovered over the airport for about an hour.

At a quarter to six in the evening, two Hawk jets were scrambled from Thornhill. The pilots described the object as incredibly shiny, reflecting the colours of the sunset. They estimated it was travelling at twice the speed of sound.

Later retellings add a dramatic climb. The fighters intercepted it at 7,000 feet. It launched itself upwards and reached 70,000 feet in under a minute. The Hawks could not follow. They returned to Thornhill Airbase, where the object was seen disappearing at high speed on a horizontal path. The altitude figures do not appear in the earliest summaries.

Air Marshal Azim Daudpota, Commander of the Air Force of Zimbabwe, spoke plainly. The Times quoted him on 3 August 1985. "This was no ordinary UFO. Scores of people saw it. It was no illusion, no deception, no imagination." Daudpota's words would follow the case for decades.

Air Commodore David Thorne, Director General of Operations, was just as direct. "We have not been able to identify the object. We have had to classify it as a UFO." He went further in a letter to the author Timothy Good, dated 24 October 1985. Thorne stressed that he was not speaking officially, then wrote that "as far as my Air Staff is concerned, we believe implicitly that the unexplained UFOs are from some civilization beyond our planet." No formal report or board of inquiry was ever published.

James Oberg, then a NASA space engineer, was unmoved. "The evidential value of unresearchable sightings in Zimbabwe is zero, however sincere the witnesses." He argued that Zimbabwe sat at the edge of the world's tracking networks. Russian and South African reconnaissance planes, he was sure, were flying over that airspace.

Oberg did not offer a solution so much as a warning. The radar data has never been published. The pilots and controllers were never named. The first newspaper reports have rarely been examined since.

The case sits in the shadow of Zimbabwe's most famous encounter, at the Ariel School in Ruwa in 1994. A retrospective in The Herald has revisited both. Yet the 1985 sighting is still something rarer. An air force that went on record. An object it could not name.
