A biologist and expedition leader who went looking for living legends. In 1980 and 1981, Roy Mackal led expeditions into the Congo in search of the Mokele-mbembe, joined by Marcellin Agnagna and J. Richard Greenwell. Those trips gathered many native reports but no sightings. In 1981 Herman A. Regusters was meant to join him at Lake Tele. The two fell out over money and leadership, and Regusters went his own way. Mackal also weighed in on the 1972 Loch Ness flipper photographs. He wondered whether the animal might be a giant embolomere.
