Maj. Jesse A. Marcel was the intelligence officer of the 509th Bomb Group at Roswell Army Air Field in 1947. After a rancher's report reached Sheriff George Wilcox, Marcel went out looking for more pieces of the debris. Photographers later caught him beside Brig. Gen. Roger M. Ramey with torn foil and sticks, after Ramey called the find a weather balloon. Then, in 1978, Marcel spoke again. He described fragments spread over about three-quarters of a mile, material that could not be burned or broken, and symbols like hieroglyphics. He was quite sure it came from nowhere on this earth.
