This 81-page Project Blue Book case file covers the Levelland, Texas sightings of the night of 2 to 3 November 1957. It holds the record card, Air Force teletype reports from the 1006th AISS and radar units, witness questionnaires, press clippings about the White Sands sightings, and analyst memos. Several witnesses said a bluish-white oval object stopped their car engines. The Air Force concluded the cause was ball lightning in stormy weather, with wet or faulty ignition systems explaining the engine failures.

ROUTING COORDINATION AFCIN-4 AFCIN-4X2b # STATEMENT OF SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE # S/3gt BARTH, Norman P. OFFICE OF RECORD 1. On 2 November 1957. the Air Technical Intelligence Center was notified of an unidentified flying object, which was reported in the vicinity of Lovelland, Texas. The impact of this sighting on the public can only be measured in terms of the publicity given the indi- dant, and the great increase in reported cases of unidentified flying objects. Approximately six hundred cases were reported in a three week period following this incident. 2. S/Sgt Earth, of the 1006th Air Intelligence Service Squadron, was assigned the task of investigating the Levelland report. Investigation of this incident required S/Sgt Barth be thorough and forceful, but also required that he be diplomatic in his dealings with the wit-nesses and other persons concerned with the sighting. The information supplied the Air Technical Intelligence Center by S/Sgt Earth was considered complete in every detail and reflected the thoroughness of this man in the performance of his duty. As a result of S/Sgt Barth's efforts the Air Technical Intelligence Center was able to keep the Air Force and other interested government agencies informed concerning this important sighting. This airman's handling of this controversial incident reflects credit upon himself and his organization. 3. Air Force Regulation 200-2, dated 5 February 1958, is the Air Force guide pertaining to unidentified flying objects. 5/3gt Barth was his organization's representative at the drafting of this regulation at the Air Technical Intelligence Center in December 1957.
