The Account
On the morning of November 9, 1979 a very unusual incident occurred in
the woodlands of Dechmont Law. An incident so unusual, some would argue
impossible, that even after 30 years, it still remains one of the most
important UFO encounters in the world!
Robert Taylor, a Livingston Development Corporation forestry worker was, along
with his red setter, conducting a routine woodland inspection in Dechmont Woods.
After walking down a forest track, Taylor rounded a corner into a small clearing
and was amazed to encounter an unearthly object. The object in question was a
large, metallic, circular sphere and spanned twenty feet across. Intrigued,
Taylor began to approach the sphere but as he did so two smaller spheres dropped
from the main sphere and started rolling towards him. With his dog now barking
furiously the two smaller spheres grabbed both of Robert’s legs and began
dragging him towards the larger sphere. As this happened Robert recalls smelling
an acrid smell and hearing a distinct hissing sound before losing consciousness.
After a period of 20 minutes he awoke to an empty clearing, the strange objects
had simply disappeared. Unable to talk and with a deep ache in his legs, unable
to walk, Robert dragged himself back to his pick-up which, upon arriving, would
not start. It was not until Robert had walked a mile back to his house that his
wife, upon seeing his dishevelled state, phoned for a doctor and the police.
Initially, the police suspected that Taylor had been assaulted by someone
unknown. However, upon visiting and carefully checking the crime scene the
police discovered two ‘ladder’ indentations on the ground where the craft had
allegedly stood and forty small, circular holes that followed the path of the
mine like objects. This baffled the police because there were no other tracks
leading in or out of the clearing and none of the corporation owned vehicles had
dimensions that matched the tracks. As the incident was a suspected assault his
clothes where sent for forensic analysis; the results being consistent with a
‘sharp upward pull’.
Theorists have attempted to explain the incident through other means; such as
‘epileptic seizure induced by a mirage from Venus’. Nevertheless, Taylor was a
highly respected member of the local community; all knowing him to be honest and
an unlikely character to invent such a story. Since the event took place, and
until his death in 2007 (aged 88 years), Taylor never deviated from his story,
nor did he seek fame or significant publicity.
In either case, the mystery surrounding the events that took place within the
Dechmont Woods on November 9, 1979 will continue to captivate those who visit
the area. ‘Strange Phenomena Investigations’, also investigated this case
and concluded wholeheartedly that all the evidence pointed to Robert seeing
something ‘not of this Earth’.
