This is a letter dated August 8, 2013 from Lisa L. Bentley, FOIA Manager for the 355th Communications Squadron at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, to John Greenewald. It answers his July 2013 request for all documents supporting the theory that A-10s dropped leftover flares, rather than a UFO being seen, on March 13, 1997. The base found no records because such operational data is kept for only six months and the documents had been destroyed. The letter explains how to appeal.

First Street Davis-Monthan AFB AZ 85707 Mr. John Greenewald Dear Mr. Greenewald This is in response to your July 17, 2013 Freedom of Information Act request for all documentation supporting the theory that there were A-10s ejecting leftover flares instead of there being a UFO sighting on March 13, 1997. In accordance with the Air Force Records Disposition Schedule, Table 13-06, Rule 01.00 and Air Force Instruction 13-204 Volume 3, Operational Data; these documents are not maintained beyond 6 months. The requested documents have been destroyed therefore we were unable to view any logs corresponding to the date mentioned. If you interpret this “no records” response as an adverse action, you may appeal our decision by writing to the Secretary of the Air Force within 60 days from the date of this letter. If no appeal is received, or if the appeal is postmarked after the conclusion of this 60-day period, the appeal may be considered closed. Include your reasons for reconsideration along with a copy of this letter.
