This material from the Haines papers at the American Heritage Center contains US Air Force Office of Special Investigations reports from November 1949. They cover a special inquiry into unconventional aircraft. An Eastern Air Lines captain was interviewed in Atlanta on 6 October 1949. He described a wingless, cigar-shaped object with two rows of lighted windows and a red flame, seen at 0340 on 23 July 1948 southwest of Montgomery, Alabama. A follow-up report closed the inquiry.

Article on Page One = Atlanta Journal Dated 24 July 1948 Two Eastern Air Lines pilots reported Saturday that their plane Friday night passed a tremendous vingeless aircraft that shot 40 feet of flame from the back end and was traveling 600 - 700 miles per hour. Capt. Co-pilot said the object looked like a 1-29 fuselage blown up and was brilliantly lighted with 2 decks of big square windows.
