This Central Intelligence Agency release, dated 2002-04-08, reproduces an intelligence information report about UFO sightings on the South Korean east coast and north of the Korean Demilitarized Zone. It says the ROK Air Force Chief of Staff briefed security unit commanders in Seoul on 10 and 11 February 1970. Since early 1970, radar stations in Kangwon-do had tracked large balloon-shaped objects, assumed to be dirigibles, that entered ROK airspace and exploded. The Chief of Staff speculated they might be used to drop agents, propaganda or germs.

(C-NOFORN) The ROKAF Chief of Staff speculated that if current maneuvers of the UFUs prove to be successful, then RK may use the self-propelled balloons for dropping agents, propaganda, or even epidemic germs into the ROK. His briefing and speculation caused consternation among the ROKAF SU CO's because this was the first report they had had of such penetrations. COMMENTS: (C-NOFORN) The information in this report was furnished by a medium-level member of a ROK intelligence agency in the PUSAE, ROK area, and who has been reporting on an irregular basis for the last four years.
