This Central Intelligence Agency file, dated 29 September 1975, collects Office of Security memoranda written while the Senate Select Committee was investigating the Agency. Staff were told to alert former employees about possible committee contact over Project MERRIMAC/RESISTANCE, and the file answers committee questions about Hayes International and Bay of Pigs pilots. It also records staff interviews about CIA name checks at NSA and a Justice Department request for records on domestic electronic surveillance. It contains no material on UFOs.
Z5 September 1975 MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD SUBJECT: Senate Select Committee l. This will record some observations concerning the interview of the undersigned and Mrs. Mabel Hoover by Mr. Eric Richard of the Senate Select Committee Staff from 1000 hours to 1130 hours on this date at the Dirksen Building. 2. Mr. Richard indicated that he had been interviewing NSA employees, and he ascertained that CIA had, for years, direct access to NSA files; and, therefore, he desired to question Mrs. Hoover concerning her use of NSA files. 3. Mr. Richard concentrated on our conducting name checks of American citizens at NSA. In this connection, he asked direct questions of Mrs. Hoover if she recalled checking on such individuals as Frank Church, Otis Pike, Stokley Carmichael, Ramsey Clark, George Wallace, George McGovern, Richard Nixon, and a number of civil rights leaders including Dr. Spock, Cora Weiss, Whitney Young, and Henry Sloan Coffin. 4. Mrs. Hoover advised that she did name checks on Clark and Wallace, and that she did not recall when she conducted these checks but that it was during the time that Ramsey Clark was Attorney General and George Wallace was Govenor of Alabama. In response to questions, she advised that she did not know why these checks were conducted. Mr. Richard then asked me if I knew why these checks were conducted. I answered that I did not, but that there was a possibility that these gentlemen may have been a candidate for special briefing; similar to the one he had received when he was given access to codeword information. 5. Mrs. Hoover stated that she did not recall ever receiving a request for checks on Senator Frank Church or Congressman Pike or any other Congressmen or Senators.
