This CIA translation, released in 2000, reproduces a 15 April 1991 Pravda report by correspondent N. Kireyev about a powerful explosion near Sasovo, Ryazan Oblast, at midnight on 12 April 1991. The blast broke windows across the town and left a crater 28 meters wide and about 4 meters deep. Local officials listed several suspected causes: buried wartime munitions, an air bomb, a meteorite, UFOs, and the ammonium nitrate the military blamed. The cause remained unknown while specialists were awaited.
