This is an unclassified FBIS Okinawa translation of a Beijing Xinhua English report dated 16 April 1992, relayed through the Joint Staff and released by the CIA. It reports that the China UFO Research Organization (CURO) would hold a national conference in Beijing the following month, with more than 100 Chinese and overseas researchers attending. The report says China has had over 5,000 sightings of unexplained aerial phenomena. It adds that CURO was set up in 1978 and is largely supported by the government.
