This Central Intelligence Agency information report, dated 27 October 1955, describes a sighting near Leningrad. On a night in July, a traveler going by train from Leningrad to Moscow saw a bright light in the sky trailing a long tail. The source says it was much too bright to be a plane and was under two thousand feet above the ground. When asked, the guide joked that it was probably a flying saucer. An editorial comment notes that another source reported the same incident.

About 10 M on the night of 10 Jul 58, while currents from Leningrad to Monroe by train, we saw a bright light in the air which was trailed by a long tail of blust snake. It was much too bright for a plane. It may have been five to 25 miles distant and was under two thousand feet above ground. 2. We inquired of our guide what it was but not only a humorous reply that it was probably a flying sensor. The guide was "Ivaior" who had been with a party of which I was a member on a previous trip.
