This NICAP compilation gathers Air Force Project Blue Book and related records on a 24 April 1949 sighting three miles north of Arrey, New Mexico, where a balloon crew from White Sands Proving Ground tracked a white ellipsoid object with a theodolite for about 60 seconds. It includes the observer's statement, a Project 10073 record card concluding UNIDENTIFIED, a 17 May 1949 OSI special inquiry report from Kelly AFB, and a completed investigation questionnaire. It also contains extracts from the Project Grudge report, including Dr. Hynek's incident index.

about $ 2 9^{\circ} $ . The object then apparently disappeared due to distance after a total time of observation of about 60 seconds.
The object was not a balloon and was some distance away. Assuming escape velocity, a truck is enclosed which figures elevation above the station of about 300,000 feet over the observed period. If this is true, the flight would have probably gone over the White Sands Proving Ground, Halloum Air Force Base, and Los Alamos.
Another balloon released from that site 15 minutes later went to 93,000 feet and ended up only 13 miles south of us when it burst at that altitude after an 88 minute flight. Therefore, the object was not a free balloon under 90,000 feet. Document, cited by the archive. The PDF is mirrored here; the original link is above.
