11MAY1950 Mr. Leon Davidson 2163 B 47th Street Los Alamos, New Mexico Dear Mr. Davidson: In reply to your letter of 24 April 1950, the project concerned with "flying saucer" investigation and analysis was discontinued as a special intelligence activity last year. I am inclosing a press release made 27 December on the subject. At the time the project was discontinued, summary reports and opinions related to the first 244 incidents had been reproduced in a form convenient for use by the press or interested persons. This material was turned over to the Directorate of Public Relations, Hq. USAF, to be used at the Pentagon Building in Washington in answering inquiries, and is available for your inspection. U.S.AF of the following IMMEDIATE RELEASE DECEMBER 27, 1949 RE 6700, Ext. 75131 AIR FORCE DISCONTINUES FLYING SAUCEFS PROJECT Disc. Grudge The Air Force has discontinued its special project investigating and evaluating reported "flying saucers" on the basis that there is no evidence the reports are not the results of natural phenomena. Discontinuance of the project, which was carried out by the Air Force, was concurred in the Departments of the Army and the Navy. The Air Force said that all evidence and analyses indicate that the reports of unidentified flying objects are the result of: (1) Misinterpretation of various conventional objects. (2) A mild form of mass hysteria. (3) Or hocxes. The project was established two years ago at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio, Headquarters of the Air Force's Air Material Command. Since January 1948 some 375 incidents have been reported and investigated. Assisting special investigators were scientific consultants from universities and from other governmental agencies. The Air Force said that continuance of the project is unwarranted since additional incidents now are simply confirming findings already reached. END
