This 1965 record, released by the JFK Library via The Black Vault, holds an August 17, 1965 letter from Charles J. Quagliana of Lockport, New York to Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the U.S. Air Force reply. The letter accuses the Air Force of censoring UFO information. In the reply, Colonel L. Conquest denies any censorship and says that 18 years of investigating over 9,000 reports point to man-made, atmospheric or celestial explanations. It also says Captain Mantell died of oxygen starvation while pursuing a UFO over Godman Field, Kentucky.

Senator Robert Kennedy Senate Office Building Washington, D.C. 141 Davison Road Lockport, New York 14094 August 17, 1965 Sir: The sightings of Unidentified Flying Objects in the southwestern United States in the past weeks bring to mind a topic that has been on my mind for the last two or three years: namely, the cencorship and hush- hush attitude of the Department of Defense and the United States Air Force in regard to their method of explaining away all sightings by claiming "illusions" and that "they were looking at stars" and other shoddy and meaningless explanations. Also, the Air Force might explain why pilots chasing these "nonexistant" UFO's have more often than not never reported in or returned to their bases with something besides "crashed in wild coun- try and body not recovered." In short sir, myself and thousands of other citizens not only in the State of New York, but throughout the country would convey the spirit of this letter to the Department of Sefense: that the public is tired of the obtuse "official" explanations of UFO's and would like the truth.
