The Kibeho apparitions: Our Lady of Kibeho, Rwanda

Kibeho is a town in southern Rwanda. In 1981 it was home to Kibeho College, a girls' boarding high school in the Diocese of Butare. What happened there became the only African entry on the Church's list of approved Marian apparitions.

November 28, 1981. Alphonsine Mumureke, a young student, was helping out in the cafeteria when she heard a voice say, "My child." Then she saw a Lady of incomparable beauty, who presented herself as "Nyina wa Jambo", the Mother of the Word. The Lady wore a seamless white dress and a white veil, with her hands clasped on her breast and her fingers pointing to the sky. "I could not determine the colour of her skin," Alphonsine said.

Her classmates thought she was mad, possessed or playing a prank. Some asked why the Lady appeared only to "that poor Alphonsine from Gisaka." Then, on January 12, 1982, Nathalie Mukamazimpaka began to see her too, and on March 2, Marie Claire Mukangango followed. The messages were stark: "Repent, repent, repent!" They also warned: "There isn't much time left for preparing for the Last Judgment."

Onlookers saw crying, tremors and comas, and heavy falls at the end of the apparitions. During one frightening vision, Alphonsine dropped to her knees seven times. Students and teachers tested the girls' bodies during the trances to verify their sincerity. Devotional accounts say needles and pliers drew no reaction.

On May 30, 1982, "more than 10,000 people of all ages and all social classes" gathered. Pilgrims later told of the sun dancing for ten minutes, from left to right and up and down. Some said it vanished, replaced by a greenish moon. Others saw luminous crosses in the sky.

August 1982. The visionaries saw the Virgin crying. Then came a vision of a "river of blood, people who killed one another, abandoned bodies with no one to bury them, a tree on fire, an open chasm, a monster, and severed heads." Meanwhile, the number of claimed visionaries outside the college kept growing. Among them was Emmanuel Segastashya, a former pagan who said he saw Jesus.

Bishop Jean-Baptiste Gahamanyi of Butare set up a medical commission on March 20, 1982, and a theological commission that May. In Lent 1983 physicians from the National University of Rwanda monitored the fasting visionaries. The visions of Jesus were not approved.

On June 29, 2001, Bishop Augustin Misago of Gikongoro gave his verdict. "Yes, the Virgin Mary appeared at Kibeho on November 28th, 1981 and in the months that followed. There are more reasons to believe in the apparitions than to deny them. Only the three initial testimonies merit being considered authentic." The Holy See released the declaration on July 2, 2001.

The early doubts came from classmates, while the Church itself filtered hard, rejecting most later claimants. The prophetic reading came later too: in 1994, the August vision "began to be interpreted as a prophecy." That April, around 17,500 people were killed at the Kibeho parish church. Marie Claire and her husband went missing in the April 1994 massacre. Misago himself was arrested in 1999 on genocide-related charges and acquitted in June 2000, a verdict that drew controversy.

Alphonsine's last public apparition came on November 28, 1989, eight years to the day after the first. Pilgrims still come every November 28. Immaculée Ilibagiza told the story in a 2008 book, and Katori Hall brought it to a New York stage in 2014. Devotional writers compare its dancing sun to Fatima.
